A LARGE BARN
The barn would be used as an infirmary with bathing racks, birthing stalls (many rescued jennies are pregnant at capture), and general feeding areas during foul weather.

PSYLLUIM PELLETS
these are essential for the diet of the burros. It helps them to keep their systems cleaned out and helps prevent sand colic. We need the pellets not the powder form!

PORTABLE SOLAR POWER SYSTEM
To provide power for a computer and lighting for shelters, remote areas of the sanctuary and during rescue missions in desolate desert back country.

NEW ROOF
Trying to sleep in the ranch house a night we are deafened by the munching of termites in the 37 year old tin and 2x4 roof, terrified that the next gust of wind will have us in the open air.

WORK CREWS
Enthusiastic volunteers or paid workers are necessary for clearing  rocks from our pastures, building stone walls, landscaping, road improvements and making room for new burros. Crews will require a place to sleep; bunk bed for our bunk house or tents for our (planned) campground, blankets or sleeping mattresses, pads, etc.

MARTERIAL FOR FENCES
--we could use lots of T-posts, steel pipe (2") for fencing and some field fence

--Wooden fence posts 4x4 or larger

--corrugated metal sheeting for wind break walls, roofing, etc.

--corral panels (any size!)

EQUIPMENT
in order to repair our road, and grade the land for corral sites, barns and buildings we could use a D-9 bulldozer

--re-bars for fondation work

--Trojan L-16 cycle batteries for our solar battery bank

--a solar electric fence, solar charger and a 2" white poly wire

--a small/medium dump trailer for cleaning corrals and preparing garden sites. Also a small manure spreader.

--Paulownia shade trees

--An early 4x4 Toyota pickup truck

MORE MONEY
No one gets paid at WBR ranch. There is no health, dental, or retirement plan. All of our assets are debts. We eat beans by candle light and carry our water. Nearly all of our time is spent caring for the animals. Without more funds  there is no time for labor-intensive improvements and quality time with the burros, horses  and mules’ we are often too tired for burro snuggling , our hobby! More money means more room for our burros and better living conditions for our animals and our volunteers.

VOLUNTEERS
Brave, trustworthy, hard workers who love and respect the burros as well as all life. Laboring for food, shelter, love and fun.

ATV
so that we can attach a small flat-bed to it in order to haul hay around to the various stations near the corrals!

We currently have plenty of jolly balls, ear nets and blankets for the burros!
Thank you to all who donated these items!!

WBR is NOT government sponsored!
Diana Chontos, president & founder of WBR
For those interested in volunteering here at the Wild Burro sanctuary, we ask that you call Diana and talk with her regarding the time frame of your stay (days, weeks or hours). Please call her at 760-384-8523. Be sure to leave your name and a number where you can be reached, letting her know the best time to call you. Most the time she is outdoors caring for the animals and doesn't always have her phone with her. In that case, just leave a message on her voicemail.
Most important of all: call first!

It is important to know that the ranch is located off the power grid, things are a bit "primitive" for some to handle! We certainly do appreciate any help you may want to give to the burros!

Karen Gilligan here. I am a volunteer and the webmaster for WBR. After having left the west coast to head back east to Ohio for family reasons back in October of 2008, I was finally able to make a much longed-for trip back to my desert home in Amargosa Valley, NV and to visit my best friend Diana Chontos of WBR. Although the stay was so very short, I had a great time just hanging out with my friend and with the burros and of course Diana's dogs! Here are some pictures that show some of the things I did while visiting!
Getting ready to feed the burros
WonKuda and me
Feeding Lady Bug
Just hanging with my friends!
Getting another bale to feed!
And here's "Orphan Annie" the cow and Jessie the burro!
The dogs of the ranch!  From left to right: Lili, Liam, Zeb, Negrita and Chicana
And last, but not least, just hanging out with my best friend Diana!
