Management strategies are significantly impacting wild burros and their habitat.
Nationally, almost 50% of Habitat and Range have been lost.
Current Available Habitat: 5, 619, 844 acres Habitat Loss: 5, 071, 112 acres
26 Herds Remain
5 are “genetically viable” to prevent inbreeding, 11 are not.
National Level of Wild Burros Allowed on Public Lands: 2, 695 Burros
Today, there are less wild burros managed within the entire United States
than what used to be managed in Southern California alone.
California Burro Statistics
Statewide Habitat Loss: 75% - Over 3.5 Million Acres
Approved Statewide Burro Population: 345 or less
3 Herds Remain – 2 Herds on less than 300, 000 acres
California wild burros are in serious danger of extinction.
Desert Tortoise Habitat now exceeds National Burro Habitat
by almost 1 million acres.
Arizona has the largest remaining burro population in the West.
It also the only state where Desert Tortoise populations are listed as Stable.
